Song Joong Ki admitted that his own arrogance nearly cost him a career-defining role.

At the recent Actors House event held as part of the 28th Busan International Film Festival, Song Joong Ki had a candid conversation with the audience, sharing various anecdotes from his 15-year career. One story that stood out was his recollection of his role in “A Werewolf Boy,” a film that marked his first appearance at the Busan International Film Festival. He admitted that he initially turned down this opportunity due to his own arrogance.

“In reality, when I received the casting offer, I declined it. It was at a time when I was just starting to take on lead roles in television dramas. I aspired to be a great actor and even felt a bit arrogant, thinking that this role had no dialogue,” Song Joong Ki reminisced. Indeed, in the film, Song Joong Ki played Chul Soo, a character who grew up in the wild and couldn’t communicate with humans through speech. Because the role had no dialogue, Song Joong Ki decided not to give it a second thought.

It wasn’t until about two months later that Song Joong Ki had a change of heart. He shared, “After about two months, when the script was sent to me again, I read it and got goosebumps. I thought, ‘Why did I reject this?'”. The actor even confessed that even after accepting the role, he still thought it would be easy because it had no lines. However, during the filming process, he realized the challenges it presented: “At first, I thought I would be comfortable because there was no dialogue. But the more I shot, the more I felt like my hands and feet were tied.”

As we all know, the end result speaks for itself. Despite the absence of dialogue for his character Chul Soo, Song Joong Ki showcased his remarkable acting abilities through body language. More importantly, he secured a classic film in his career, and to this day, he has yet to replicate that success in any of his subsequent cinema releases.
