“The Glory” Starring Song Hye Kyo Reigns as the Most Beloved Korean Drama of 2023.

In a recent development, the South Korean newspaper Joynews initiated a public poll to determine the ranking of the best TV series of 2023. The top 3 TV dramas featured some familiar masterpieces from the world of renowned stars.

Unsurprisingly, “The Glory,” starring Song Hye Kyo, secured the coveted top position. This series marked a remarkable comeback for the actress after enduring a period of criticism for subpar acting, lackluster expressions, rigid performances, and a lack of on-screen chemistry with her co-stars. “The Glory” not only brought Song Hye Kyo back to the limelight but also earned her two major awards, the Baeksang and Daesang, signifying industry recognition and audience appreciation for her talent and dedication.

“The Glory” was penned by the acclaimed screenwriter Kim Eun Sook, known for her previous successes with dramas like “Descendants of the Sun” and “The Heirs.” The series revolves around the meticulously plotted revenge scheme of Moon Dong Eun, a character seeking retribution for the past abuses suffered at the hands of a wealthy group of friends. Despite its gritty and dark narrative, “The Glory” effectively exposes the harsh realities of a society where money wields excessive power.

Coming in second place is “Moving,” often referred to as the Korean equivalent of the Avengers. This drama explores the lives of ordinary individuals with latent superpowers who harness their abilities for justice and to combat evil. “Moving” boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Jo In Sung and Han Hyo Joo. Right from the first few episodes, the series captivated viewers with its humorous, engaging, and innovative storytelling.

Taking the third spot is “Reborn Rich,” starring Song Joong Ki. Sharing a theme of vengeance, this drama delves into the life of Hyun Woo, who is wronged by his own family on charges of embezzlement, only to be reborn as Jin Do Joon, the youngest son of the same influential family, determined to uncover the truth behind his demise. Although the series introduces a fresh concept, the majority of viewers concurred that Song Joong Ki’s performance fell short of expectations, as his acting was perceived as lacking experience. The plot of the drama also received mixed reviews, with some considering it a hit-and-miss affair.

2023 has been a remarkable year for Korean dramas, with “The Glory” emerging as the clear favorite, followed by “Moving” and “The Youngest Son of a Tycoon.” These dramas have enthralled audiences with their compelling stories, star-studded casts, and diverse themes, making them a must-watch for K-drama enthusiasts.
