Hellbound is a television project invested and produced by Netflix, adapted from the webcomic Jiok by two authors Yeon Sang Ho (writer) and Choi Kyu Seok (artist).
The work was born in the context that Netflix in particular and Korean television in general are doing well with many horror and supernatural TV series adapted from webtoons such as Strangers From Hell (2019), Sweet Home (2020) or The Uncanny Counter (2021).
On August 16, Chosun Biz reported that Hellbound had been invited to the 46th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to be held from September 8 here. This is the first Korean drama to receive this honor.
Hellbound will be shown on TIFF’s Primetime program. Primetime focuses on finding works that blend the television genre with the storytelling of movies, possessing impressive plots and monumental images.
Over the past 6 years, Primetime has introduced audiences to series such as Heroes, Transparent or Black Mirror… Many of these continue to resonate at television awards and are well received by audiences around the world.
In 2021, in addition to Hellbound from Korea, Netflix has another representative on the list of TV series introduced at TIFF, which is Ava DuVernay’s American film Colin in Black and White. The other two TV series on the list are The Panthers from New Zealand and Sort Of from Canada.
Hellbound has a length of 6 episodes, belongs to the genre of drama, fantasy mixed with horror elements. The content of the film takes place in a fantasy world, where supernatural phenomena upset people’s lives on a societal scale.
In that world, many people will receive prophecies about the time of their death. When the moment is right, the angel of death will appear and finish them off. The person who received the prophecy was like a fish in a basket, unable to resist the fate of being sent to hell.
Jung Jin Soo (Yoo Ah In) is the leader of a new religion Saejinrihwe. He constantly spread the fact that the angel of death rising from hell was God’s arrangement. Not only exuding intense charm, Jin Soo also makes people curious because of the hidden corners of his body and purpose.
Before the growing expansion of the Saejinrihwe sect, a TV director named Bae Young Jae (Park Jung Min) was determined to find out the truth about this organization. This is also the goal of lawyer Min Hye Jin (Kim Hyun Joo) when she speaks out against the Hwasalchok group – the radical followers of Saejinrihwe.
Hellbound story in more complex with the emergence of Song So-hyun (Won Jin A), wife of Bae Jae – a victim unable to overcome the trauma caused by social chaos. The last character in the polygon is Jin Kyung Hoon (Yang Ik June), a detective who is investigating the appearance of angels of death.
